TITLE: A new open source identification key generation webservice

ABSTRACT

Single-access keys are widely used by scientists to identify taxa. Many systems, already provide identification key generation e.g. MyKey (Gerard D., Vignes-Lebbe R., 2010) but on a fixed set of data or key distribution and customization, e.g. Open Key Editor (Van Spronsen E. et al., 2010), WikiKeys (Hagedorn et al., 2010). We present here a new open-source tool that provides a flexible key generation service available world-wide for single users or research institutes.

This online service will generate identification keys on the fly using Structured Descriptive Data (Hagedorn et al, 2006) input files. Several output formats will be provided: plain text, HTML, Wiki, PDF, DOT and SDD.

Furthermore, the service will be able to display the key using a flat or a tree representation.

The user will be able to alter parameters in order to optimize the key topology.

The technologies employed are Java/J2EE and both webservices communication protocols are supported (Simple Object Access Protocol and Representational State Transfert).

This new open source identification key generation webservice is being developed within the WP5 of the ViBRANT project that started on 2010 December. ViBRANT is a European project (7th framework program) aimed at providing a framework for European biodiversity research (http://vbrant.eu/). Hence, this webservice will be embedded into the Scratchpads platform.

A web interface will be accessible to single users (www.identificationkey.fr).

Installation packages will also be freely available allowing larger institutions to deploy the webservice on their own network.
