Abstract
Large-scale digitisation programmes are becoming more common. The high quality of images which has become standard result in large file sizes of approximately 150MB per image. The need to manage these images and make them available online has prompted the development of an image workflow incorporating an image management system at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The workflow incorporates image capture, automated image processing, metadata recording and optical character recognition, quality control, image streaming online and archiving of original image files. This workflow has been developed and tested during the capture and processing of over 100,000 specimens, and development is still being undertaken to incorporate changes from the lessons learned so far. The workflow is modular, allowing additional elements to be incorporated as required.
