Abstract

In 1994, the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia began creating tools to archive digital imagery and allow users to leverage that content for education and extension in natural resources, agriculture, Integrated Pest Management, forestry, invasive species and related disciplines. The database systems and methods for delivering digital imagery with associated metadata have constantly evolved as new technologies have become available and the scope of the image archive has increased. The most recent evolutionary steps of the programs have allowed for integration with 3rd party systems, improved feedback to photographers on the value of their images, and project-targeted recruiting of imagery. Developers of the system continue to embark on new expansions to increase interaction with other systems, allow for linking to voucher specimens, and improve the core functionality.
