Abstract

Darwin Core is TDWG standard for describing biodiversity records. It is widely used across many projects including Map of Life, VertNet, Geomancer, the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit, and others. As the standard has become popular, it has created a huge opportunity for code reuse between new and existing projects. The Darwin Core Engine will help to make that happen by providing a toolkit for publishing, validating, improving, storing, accessing, subscribing, and searching Darwin Core records. It is an open source project being developed under the National Science Foundation-funded VertNet project and hosted on GitHub. In this talk we will introduce the conceptual and technical framework for the Darwin Core Engine, provide a live publishing and search demo, and discuss next steps and broader impacts with respect to the impending flood of new records being digitized and represented using the Darwin Core.
