Abstract

High quality, fit-for-use data is essential for informed decisions and actions for conservation and sustainable use of living resources. Since, its inception in 2001, GBIF has facilitated access to over 400 million primary biodiversity data records. However, there is a need for expediting efforts to unlock the enormous volume of scientifically useful, socially, economically and ecologically relevant data housed in individual and institutional lockers, both in biodiversity rich and data rich regions of the globe.

In early 2013, Nature Publishing Group announced a launch of ‘Scientific Data’, a open-access, online-only publication for descriptions of scientifically valuable datasets. In addition, to promoting open-access, improved discovery, enhanced quality; Scinetific Data will provide much needed recognition to individuals and institutions for making valuable datasets widely available. GBIF network has responded promptly to the announcement of Scientific Data; and efforts are underway to explore processes, workflows so that descriptions of biodiversity datasets can also be submitted to Scientific Data for possible publications. During, the talk we will share early details of Nature Publishing Group's Scientific Data – GBIF partnership. Such a partnership will pave way for inculcating culture of recognizing data publishing as a mainstream activity within biodiversity science.
