Abstract

There is a widespread recognition of the need for a data citation metric in order to recognise the contribution individuals make in contributing to and sharing their research datasets. The demand for such a metric is increased by the ever-increasing amount of data sharing and data aggregators in our field, as well as by the new data journals. Should we stick with something akin to traditional bibliographic citation? Or should we incorporate ideas from the alternative metrics community? This talk will cover how we have approached this problem for data contained within the Scratchpads virtual research environment, and the lessons and difficulties we have found along the way.
