Abstract

This workshop on documenting Darwin Core builds throughout each of four sessions over multiple days. Each session will begin with a short presentation providing background, and outlining the scope and goals of the ensuing discussion.

This session will focus on elaborating recent discussions on the Darwin Core's basisOfRecord, and how it relates to rdf:type, and to the DwC Type Vocabulary. A fundamental issue concerns the distinction between physical or conceptual "things" (e.g., specimens), and data records that record information about those things. We will address the question of which DwC terms describe records, and which describe the things that records are about.
