Abstract
The goal of the group is to discuss and establish a shared understanding for how to represent "Species information" for electronic dissemination, exchange and integration including shared vocabularies.
By "Species Information" we refer to all kinds of properties or traits related to taxa (of any rank), including those related to descriptions, legal, conservation, management, demographics, nomenclatural, related resources, etc. In this regard, this group's interests go beyond strictly taxonomic descriptions.
Having this focus, this interest group will touch upon and interact with other TDWG groups such as the Biological Descriptions IG and the Imaging IG and incorporate the function of the earlier Species Profile Model sub-group.
Sharing species information is not only about exchanging information among scientific peers. Of special concern to the founding members of this group is how to effectively present "science-grade" information to a non-specialized public audience.
This group, open to all interested parties, originates mainly from two current initiatives, the "Encyclopedia of Life" and "Plinian Core Group".
