Abstract

Revisionary systematics is challenging, especially in large groups of organisms because it requires efficient management of various information, including, but not limited to nomenclature, bibliography, distribution, host plants, morphology; handling specimen data, manipulating drawings and photographs. In modern days, most of the researchers cannot do effective research without using electronic equipment: computers, scanners, digital cameras, mobile devices; but most of the people still do not realize that one of the most powerful tools could be database driven applications, especially those specially designed for their research needs. Cybertaxonomical approach could not only increase their productivity, but assure higher quality of their publications. Projects could be done much easier even in collaborative multi-institution environment.

Many software packages specially designed for biological research are available now, those are related but not limited to handling specimen data, mapping tools, applications for building identification guides, software for handling of phylogenetic data. On the other had, there are only few integrated packages specially build for revisionary research and covering all the demands associated with such a work.

The presentation covers some of the available applications, their features and future developments.
