Abstract
We have created a complete pipeline for the researchers working with strains or specimens and that need a system to manage their collections from the field to the laboratory and to provide tools to analyze and share their findings with the rest of the scientific community.
The new pipeline is based on the BioloMICS software and includes:
1. A mobile application (IOS, Android and Windows Mobile) to collect samples information directly from the field such as pictures, GIS coordinates, time and miscellaneous other metadata
2. A desktop application that synchronizes with the mobile app and where a complete and extensible set of data are recordable such as administrative data, bibliography, geographical, ecological, chemical, physiological, medical, molecular data as well as links to other specialized repositories (e.g. GenBank, GBIF, Swissprot, EUBOLD, EOL, Catalog of Life, etc). This application not only allows to store data but also to perform advanced queries, polyphasic identifications and classifications based on any combination of characteristics (not only molecular)
3. Data are stored in a local light weight (SQL-lite) database
4. Data are shareable using the central StrainsBook facility that is accessible, searchable by anyone or by a selected list of co-workers
The StrainsBook website that will be released by the end of the year 2014, will include user-friendly, basic and advanced searching facilities, distribution maps, online polyphasic identifications and web services to download data. The system will be free with some limitations (maximum number of records will be limited to 1000 and some analytical tools will not be free) and the StrainsBook system will be hosted and maintained by CBS-KNAW (www.cbs.knaw.nl). This non-open source software will be downloadable by the end of 2014 on the BioAware website at www.bio-aware.com.
