Abstract
The Global Names project aims to build a free and open infrastructure based on names to serve nomenclature, taxonomists and managers of biodiversity information. I Some of the components that have been built include the Global Names Usage Bank (GNUB) with its dependent service, Zoobank; the Global Names Index with 22 million name-strings; the Global Names Interface for Taxonomic Editing, the Global Names Recognition and Discovery tool for finding names in data sources, a names parser, and prototype reconciliation and resolution services. It is argued that priority should now be given to development of production-grade resolution services and the integration of an annotation system. The requirements for this are outlined, with an assessment of costs, performance, and expectations of 'proof of concept', 'prototype', 'production' and 'flawless' services.
