Abstract
Data produced by digitisation increases the scientific use of natural history collections. However, in mass digitisation, attention must be paid to the flawless management of the workflows, and high quantities of end results should not be compromised by a low standard of quality. Digitarium is a Finnish digitisation centre specialised in large-scale digitisation of natural history collections. DigiWeb is a software product designed and implemented by Digitarium. It is a web-based environment for controlling the workflow of transcribing metadata from images of natural history specimens. DigiWeb provides tools to manage the workflow of transcribing and data proofing. It includes all parties to the process, and allows collaboration, communication, monitoring and training. The community consist of the owner of collection, personnel of Digitarium and contractors. User roles and permissions in workflow are individually granted for each participant, based on skill level. DigiWeb also provides an integrated set of tools to remotely use different external sources of open data (e.g. GBIF and The Plant List) to improve the quality and uniformity of outcome data. The data emerging from this process passes quality control standards which are supported by DigiWeb and based on the strict requirements of the ISO 2859 standard.
