A biodiversity investigation can involve a large number of "assets" including collected samples, input data, complex calculations and results, and can be performed by groups of researchers, possibly at different institutions. The complexity and variety of these assets makes control of the investigation difficult, and the lack of any overall description makes validation of the investigation and sharing and reuse of the research problematic.

SEEK for Science http://www.seek4science.org is an "Aggregated Asset Infrastructure", providing tools to support access-controlled asset sharing across consortia of researchers. A scientist may register their assets, either through a direct upload, or through a web-link held in public databases. SEEK supports versioning of all assets to retain the history and life-cycle of the assets. The Investigation, Studies, Assay (ISA) framework is used so assets can be interlinked to provide descriptions, scientific context, relationships between assets, and provide clear credit to the scientists and projects involved in asset creation.

SEEK is open-source, configurable and adaptable. It is being used in projects including SysMO-DB project http://www.sysmo-db.org/, Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory (BioVeL) http://www.biovel.eu, and the Virtual Liver Network http://www.virtual-liver.de.

The generic SEEK platform and a variant called the BioVeL portal will be demonstrated. The BioVeL portal is used to browse or upload workflows, view their characteristics, run workflows, and view and download results

SEEK is being funded by the BBSRC in the UK, and the BMBF in Germany, as part of the SysMO-DB project.
