Abstract

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology in Munich have developed a web portal for the presentation of high resolution digital images of insect drawers (www.digicoll.info). For the first time scientists have the chance to get full remote access to the large entomological collections from Berlin and Munich, without physically visiting the respective institutions. In addition the broader public will have virtual access to see significant parts of the museum collections that are usually locked air tight beyond the exhibition area. Several thousand drawers have already been digitized and images are accompanied by the names of all species contained in each insect drawer. A taxon search within the portal produces a list of images from all drawers containing the respective group or species thereby providing specialists a quick overview of available material from all taxa they are interested in, e.g. before planning a study visit to a museum. The long term goal for this web application would be to integrate digital images of drawers from many museums all around the world. We would thus like to invite other museums and entomological collections to participate in the project and can offer the portal as a means of publication for their own collection holdings.
