Abstract

The semantic web offers the biodiversity community the ability to discover and link data by drawing new information and knowledge from specimens, environments, sequences, and phenotypes among other sources.  However, converting data that has been collected in the field, typically as spreadsheets, into a format suitable for use on the semantic web can be a difficult, time-consuming, and error-prone process.  This talk will present a platform that enables individual researchers to easily validate data, assign globally unique identifiers, and publish, based on their own spreadsheet data. The talk will present the Biocode Field Information Management System (FIMS) (https://github.com/biocodellc/biocode-fims) and how it works from a functional perspective.  The talk will also highlight FIMS integration with the following sources: KE Emu collections management software (https://emu.kesoftware.com/), VertNet (http://vertnet.org/), and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) BioProject database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bioproject/).
