Abstract

TaxaB29 is an application designed for plant identification in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa using visible and simple morphological characteristics to assist in the rapid identification of plants for individuals with minimal training in plant identification. The application uses datasets from the National Herbarium Pretoria Computerised Information System (http://posa.sanbi.org/intro_precis.php), National Vegetation Database (http://www.biodiversity-plants.de/biodivers_ecol/article_meta.php?DOI=10.7809/b-e.00096), three herbaria in the province and datasets held by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency. Secondary to the morphology, it uses local common names to assist in the identification process and it also rapidly provides the user with national threat status of each species identified, using data from the threatened species programme (http://redlist.sanbi.org). Although, there are numerous applications available such as Leafsnap, NatureGate, DIY and Plantifer, these applications had zero success in identifying plants in this area. This is attributed to the simple fact that the datasets used in these applications are not specifically for plant species of the Eastern Cape Province thus resulting in poor performance. TaxaB29 uses local databases and datasets thus increasing the plant identification potential in the field. Further, it allows conservation law-officers to rapidly identify rare and endangered plants from poachers thus helping in the fight against poaching of rare and endangered plants in the region.
