Abstract

More and more field observers are using photographs, sound recordings and videos to document species in the field. For mammal surveys, camera trap data are proving to be particularly successful.  We will present a brief survey of the Audubon Core (AC; http://terms.tdwg.org/wiki/Audubon_Core) controlled vocabulary which was designed to standardize biodiversity multimedia metadata and facilitate comparison and exchange across media collections. We will focus on AC's potential utility for service and scientific metadata suitable for comparison with other services that do or may adopt AC.

Particular attention will be paid to the use of media as evidence for biotic data occurrences and consequently to issues surrounding publication of metadata as Darwin Core Archives. The latter permit simple import into aggregation services such as those of GBIF, as well as consumption by other services.
